The Commerce Fire Department has a Fire Chief and 11 full time paid department personnel and a Volunteer Fire Chief and 25 Volunteer Firemen. The shift firefighters are divided into three shifts rotating 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. All firefighters are professionally trained and certified as firefighters by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. The department consists of 6 EMT - B's certified with the Texas Department of Health Services.

The department has an Enhanced 911 Emergency Response System. The dispatchers can immediately determine the physical address from which the call is originating to assist in locating citizens in need of fire, medical or police assistance.

The City of Commerce service area is 6.5 square miles with a population of 16,000 (including the university). In addition to fire services to the city, the department is responsible for a fire district within Hunt County covering an area of approximately 150 square miles and approximately 25,000 people. The Commerce Fire Department also does up to 300 residential fire inspections per year and inspects all businesses.
